A beautiful autumnal November morning greeted the mighty Slayer FC as they prepared to right a painful 1-1 draw which had been inflicted almost 12 months before. The situation on this sunny but cold morning could not be any further removed from that dank December afternoon played on a mud bowl of a pitch, against a team clearly sporting at least 10 web footed inbreds!

On the back of 4 straight wins Slayer FC met in good spirits, buoyed by the return of “Smoking Steve Jones” and with the added rare luxury of 2 substitutes. Now as many of you will know I have a poor memory for details so please excuse any glaring omissions of footballing excellence, if you were good and I have forgotten to mention it I apologise unreservedly!

So with the wind on our backs and the sun on our faces Slayer FC kicked off and immediately took control with some good measured passing. Fred, Andre and Adam “blaze them over the bar” Binns all showing good intent with Nick and Steve commanding the midfield. After some concerted pressure Fred topped up his seasons tally with a well taken goal from a Nick S corner, 1-0 and still in 3rd gear. The Vikings rarely attempted any rape and pillage of the Slayer goal in the opening third of the half as the back four  played with consummate ease clearing everything the Vikings had to

throw at them. After some neat interchange Nicks run on goal was cut short with a crude challenge by the Vikings central defender, PENALTY!!!! Steve stepped up to the plate and with the cool head expected of Her Majesties finest promptly hit the post! However to his credit some 5 minutes later after another scything challenge Steve curled a beautiful right foot free kick high and wide past the keeper into the net, 2-0! As half time approached Slayer continued to play with ease in all areas of the park, for Julian this half was to be a peaceful tour of duty with only mundane keeping tasks to complete. It is with some degree of embarrassment that at this point Nick scored the most curious of goals, an innocuous shot concealed as a friendly back pass somehow eluded old father time in the Vikings goal! a somewhat muted reaction greeted Nicks fist pumping celebrations, but as Nick later stated “ they all count” !!

With the second half under way and with the wind and sun in our faces we expected a more concerted effort by the Vikings who at half time had brought the matching 118 118 twin on to play up front to form a pseudo 70s hair doo strike partnership, however the back four stayed firm despite Matt’s equal opportunities meanderings in the box. Julian ably dealt with the single Vikings shot on goal of the match, further goals from Nick (2) completing a rare hat trick,  Fred (1) , and a stunning “Bullet Header” from Dave “Rudd the Locks” Yates rounded off a superb performance for Slayer FC. As the manager reflected over a pint in the bar “It’s the best we’ve played in a while” Steve Jones by his own admission enjoyed a quiet reintroduction to top flight Veterans football, and Alex showed well again slipping into the right side when replacing Graham.

Man of the Match was not a forgone conclusion as everyone who had proudly pulled on the red and white (and grey) of Slayer FC had given 150%, but in the end Nick was declared “best in show” for his 3 goals and determined performance in the engine room, so onwards and upwards, next stop Hythe FC, come on lads lets put this one to bed, once and for all.
