‘Vikings Plundered’ There were rich pickings to be had at Canterbury’s latest match against Hughin. It was handy that we had a team of 13 to choose from as we donated two of them in order to even up the numbers. Keith was back to referee and his mad eyes seemed to suggest he was a little ‘unhinged’. He certainly worked himself into a bit of a state over the fact that both team strips appeared to be variants of the colour red. ‘I can’t call you both Reds’ he repeated. After agreeing to refer to Canterbury as ‘Clarets’ the gloom seemed to lift from him, (if wasn’t to last though). The playing surface was perfect and it was evident that Canterbury were profiting from their midweek training sessions. Neat exchanges of passes, solid defence and incisive forward play led to three headed goals in quick succession. Ian and Nick took advantage of poor handling by the goalkeeper and Fred showed his strength to complete the trio of headers. The only incident of note for Matt and the back four involved a run by one of our own loan players (Jamie), into the Slayer penalty area. He fell under a challenge from Dave Read and Keith pointed to the spot. Dave was clearly not happy and was lead to the sidelines by Keith.

Following a lengthy discussion in which Jamie appeared to support Dave’s protestations of innocence Keith changed his decision, as is his prerogative ‘under the rules of Association Football’. This led to a barrage of complaints from Hughin before the whistle indicated the end of the first half. 3-0 After their respective pep talks both teams got ready for the start of the second half. ‘Where is the referee?’ asked the players. It was true, Keith had vanished without trace. A search party was dispatched without success and his disappearance led to the inevitable comparisons with Sol Campbell. Fortunately, Hughin’s own version of Shane MacGowan donned the refs clobber and off we went for the second half. If anything, Canterbury were even stronger in the second half despite Hughin having another player turn up. Another four goals were added, one by Mark and three by Fred to leave the final score 7-0. Canterbury will play stiffer opposition this season but teams like Hughin still need to be put to the sword. Watching them trundle off suitably dismembered, it was a clear that this particular mission had been accomplished.

Man of the Match went to Mark Kidd who seemed to be involved in every goal. It was clear however, that every player acquitted themselves well in this game. It is now important to keep the momentum going… Team: Juilan, Dave Read, Matt , Dave Yates, Mark Kidd, Nick, Ian, Mark Wilbourn, Andre, Darren, Joe, Fred. |
