CANTERBURY DYNAMOES FC 0

After putting together a string of impressive results in recent weeks, Slayer met Canterbury Dynamoes at Thannington Rec for the last game before Christmas.  Due to the heavy rain experienced recently the pitch was on the heavy side, bare in odd places and in need of a stud of good length – not unlike the ladies at Mark and Martins’ speed dating sessions apparently.

Having secured the services of a referee at the last minute, Slayer kicked off with the advantage of a slight downward slope in the first half.  In a 4-5-1 formation, Steve J. appeared on the left of midfield, with Mark W. making his return to action in a central midfield role.  As the half progressed Slayer continued their recent good form and put together a number of impressive passing moves, one of which led to the opening goal from Nick S.  This was Nick’s fourth goal in two games following his hat-trick against Hughin Vikings, although that match did include a shot that somehow eluded the bearded keeper – he was clean shaven when the ball left Nick’s foot.

There was little threat to the Slayer goal during this opening period and it was only a matter of time before Slayer increased their lead.  Following a move down the left, Mark C. crossed for Steve J. to flick the ball on with his quiff into the path of an oncoming Dynamoes defender, who applied the finishing touch.  Jones’s attempt to claim the goal as his own smacked of desperation and quite rightly fell on deaf ears.

The final action of note in the half resulted in a bizarre third goal for Slayer.  After a Dynamoes player passed the ball back towards his own goalkeeper, the threat of a goal appeared minimal.  However, the keeper was clearly entering into the festive spirit and dropped the ball at Fred’s feet.  The by now laughing policeman, not entering into the festive spirit, hammered the ball home from fully two yards.  Short of presenting Fred with his favourite cigar and a glass of Moet & Chandon, the keeper could not have been more accommodating.

The second half followed a similar pattern, although Slayer did not capitalise on their superiority.  The back four were hardly troubled, with Dave Y. and Matt putting in another solid performance at the heart of defence.  As the half progressed, Mark C. had a number of attempts at goal, all unsuccessful.  However it would appear that Steve J., now lurking on the touchline, had a large part to play in the full-back’s misfortune.  Having been informed of the prospect of an assault up the back passage by the leering Jones should he open his account for Slayer, the full-back was visibly distressed; just as he was about to replicate Hoddle’s goal v. Watford in the early eighties, the very thought of the ‘celebration’ to follow caused him to send the shot wide – twice.

There were a number of other chances for Slayer to increase their lead.  Perhaps the most memorable fell to Fred.  Moving with a speed of foot not seen since someone last asked ‘Anyone for Goldfingers?’, Fred latched onto Nick S.’s pinpoint cross but somehow headed over from under the crossbar – maybe he really did feel guilty about his earlier good fortune.  Julian was called into action late on the game, leaping to his right to save a long range effort.

All in all, another good performance.  The passing and movement was again impressive, with a number of good performances.  As an added bonus, Mark W. got through the game unscathed whilst Matt was deservedly voted man of the match.
